Just remembered something I was told when checking out a Kukri at a car boot sale earlier this year:
" That bit there (referring to the cho/kaudi) is what the Gurkhas use as an aiming sight when they threw the Kukri" :?

It's a little-known fact that the kukri was covertly used by Australian troops, on the basis that the curve in the blade made it come back when thrown. :lol:

Yes indeed. I believe that particular quote is associated with an American Colonel who wrote an article on military knives in the late 1940's/50's.

I have also seen it perpetuated by others in subsequent work.

Still hunting for the all too elusive "boomerang" kukri, I guess one will fly past sooner or later....

War deparment documents to wsc around 1950 also thought the kaudi was a sight!

The earliest reference Ive seen to it being a sight for throwing, {sometimes with strings attached to retrieve it!} were from ww1 equivalents to the daily mail. {Sadly I don't think I have any copies on file.}
