This one sold the other day for 420 pounds. I watched with interest as I'm really out of my depth on these. I did however translate through a Nepalese friend of a friend the inscription that was on the scabbard. It seems to be added as a personal touch by a past owner.

Well I was told that "It is Devanagari script - Nepalese or Hindi - and it reads Tendra Sardar".

"Sardar is Punjabi."

I looked up the word Sardar - Sardar in the Persian amalgam of sar meaning head and dar, a suffix derived from the verb dashtan which means to hold. So the the whole word means holder of headship is an honorific signifying an officer of rank, a general or chief of a tribe or organisation.

I think this makes it more interesting and would suggest that this belonged to someone of high social or military ranking. It is in such good condition and the metal work is stunning.

Would be interested as to peoples thoughts.

Thank you.

Its a nice kothimora . :D Probably £600 after fees then.... How long is the blade?

Ignoring post C.1960 pieces and some low quality ones ,I would guess the majority of Kothimoras are for an Officer of rank or a person of significant standing..

Nice to have an honorific on it though!

Tendra is an area in Odisha in India, Or a Scandanavian girls name, perhaps other meanings as well depending on exact spelling...

Spiral

The spelling is as I was told in a text. Tendra. I think 44cm end to end.

Might look that Odisha bit up just now on the map. Just did and there is a Tendra Village in Odisha. Further south than I thought.

Date?? I would not have clue but early 20th Century maybe?

I Wasn't doubting what you said.. And I see you take the search for knowledge seriously... thats good!

Just its factually impossible to accurately translate letter for letter from languages based on different origins and scripts..

Hence kukri, khukuri , kookerie, kukhri, etc...

If Anyone who tells you different, {And many will}they are ignorant of the translation of languages... :o

I Would like to see more pics of blade, but early 20th century seems a safe bet for the silverwork I would think..

I think its possible Tendra may have other translations, or indeed meanings from the 2 google gave me on the first search page...

Hi Spiral - did not mean it like that.

I tend to think that there is a different meaning to the word Tendra - if that is the correct interpretation. I still think this is a name of someone rather than a town in Northern India. But I have been unable to find anything.
